As the NBU reported in an official letter to Glavkom, the National Bank plans to conduct massive staff layoffs in the second half of 2015. The number of NBU employees and regional offices will be reduced by 50%, meaning approximately 5 people will be laid off. Management attributes this drastic measure to the current crisis in the country. Staff reductions are also promised at the NBU's central office and structural divisions.
According to Glavkom, Valeria Gontareva initially took an even more radical approach to the issue. The head of the central bank proposed cutting all employees, retaining only the most important specialists in the central office. Gontareva estimated that there were 150 to 200 of these. But ultimately, she backed away from this shocking decision.
In addition, the NBU plans to transfer its educational institutions, which employ up to 1,500 people, to the Ministry of Education.
The NBU also decided to save money by getting rid of its departmental television channel. During Arbuzov's tenure (2011-2012), the National Bank spent 117,97 million hryvnias on the creation of the business television channel "BTB." This is the exact amount stated in the criminal case against the former NBU governor. Next year, the channel will be transferred to the Ministry of Information Policy, headed by Yuriy Stets.
Bankers claim that this NBU reorganization is related to the change in the structure of the National Bank. The NBU now wants to focus only on the core functions of a central bank. The extent to which spending will be reduced is not being disclosed. The National Bank also refused to provide an expense estimate for 2014, promising to publish the information later. However, the NBU's management has decided not to sell expensive cars, such as the Lexus LS460 and Toyota Camry.
