The Kyiv prosecutor's office is putting the brakes on another criminal case.

The Kyiv Prosecutor's Office is attempting to shelve criminal cases opened against controversial businessman Pavlo Ovcharenko, according to sources in the Main Investigative Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Over the past two months, investigators, overseen by Kyiv Prosecutor Serhiy Yuldashev, have come close to establishing Ovcharenko's guilt in a number of cases. But just recently, the investigative direction has completely changed: the case has been stalled. Sources claim the winds of change have emanated from Yuldashev's office, who, in turn, receives orders from Vitaliy Yarema's deputy, Mykola Gerasimyuk. Initially, the Ovcharenko case file was to be transferred to investigative authorities in the Luhansk region, where it could subsequently be simply "destroyed by separatists" or, at worst, "burned in the captured prosecutor's office."

There are reports that this scenario originated with Deputy Mykola Gerasimyuk, whose primary task is to ensure "maximum compliance with the law" when closing cases against Ovcharenko and ensuring the businessman's ability to return to Ukraine. The decision was made to transfer the case to investigative authorities in the Kharkiv region—far from Kyiv. Moreover, if it were ever revealed that criminal cases against the notorious businessman were closed by Kharkiv law enforcement, the blame could be shifted to the separatist sentiments of local authorities. Thus, one can only guess why Prosecutor Yuldashev and Gerasimyuk, who had so actively initiated the Ovcharenko investigation, began to stall the case.
