In Zhytomyr, an assassination attempt was made on Maria Shomko, a journalist with the publication "20 Minutes." She wrote about this on her Facebook page.
According to Maria, on October 7, a car waiting with its headlights off near her home attempted to hit her. She links the attack to her investigation into Zhytomyr Penal Colony No. 4.
"As I approached the house, I heard something moving at high speed behind me. The car, its headlights already on, was heading straight for me. It wasn't blaring any horns. The only thing that saved me was that I managed to turn into an alley and run into the yard. The car continued on without stopping," the journalist writes.
"The police were called immediately after the attempted hit-and-run (they arrived on the scene about 40 minutes later). I filed a report and an explanation on the spot. I associate this incident with my professional activities, specifically the investigation into Colony No. 4. We received evidence of widespread and systemic abuse by the colony's management. Not long before, my source in the colony, Ivan Nodzhak, was beaten. He received death threats."
As Maria writes, according to the colony's leadership, Ivan cut himself with a sharpened spoon.
She later told the Zhitomir Journal that she had evidence of widespread and systemic abuses by the prison's leadership.
According to Maria, the facility also contains violations regarding chemical containment practices, and there's also a mysterious plastic bottle recycling facility there. Officially, it doesn't exist, but according to the inmates, it exists and they work there, and the chemical waste it releases into the sewer system poses a threat to the environment and people.
Maria supplemented her words and the information received from prisoners with photographs of dozens of documents—numerous statements from prisoners addressed to the Prosecutor General of Ukraine regarding the violations listed above, as well as work and production records.
