It appears that the skin of the Orthodox oligarch Novinsky has already been divided between Poroshenko and Kolomoisky.
It seems fortune is running out on one of the Yanukovych-era business darlings. Over the past year, Vadym Novinsky has lost not only his influence but also his potential acquisitions.
And now Ukrainian media are reporting that Novinsky (along with his partner Akhmetov) could lose a significant portion of their metallurgical exports to non-CIS countries. And then—goodbye, huge foreign currency earnings!
And although the unfavorable global market conditions are to blame for the failure in foreign markets, a thick black streak can be seen in the life of the owner of Smart Holding.
Expanding his influence, Igor Kolomoisky has long since identified his next target: Rinat Akhmetov. The easiest way to get to him is to exploit a weak link. Vadym Novinsky, a partner of the former "master of Donbas," is such a weak link.
Novinsky's decline began much earlier. The fact is, his business empire encompasses too many assets across a wide range of industries—food processing and metallurgy, gas production and construction, retail and shipbuilding, and a couple of banks to boot. Effectively managing this multitude of companies requires not only resources but also expertise. And that's where the problems begin.
As a result of a chain of events and actions, a temporary administration was introduced today at Novinsky's Forum Bank.
The Kherson and Black Sea shipyards are in the process of bankruptcy.
Food company Veres is counting its losses after losing the Russian market.
In the fourth quarter of last year, gas producer Regal Petroleum limited its operating activities “due to ongoing geopolitical and financial uncertainty in Ukraine.”
The operations of the Amstor retail chain's stores are paralyzed; Smart Holding has not yet been able to restore them, and it is unlikely that it will.
The very fact that Novinsky tried to "squeeze" Amstor by force demonstrates that the oligarch still hasn't realized that this country, like its people, has changed dramatically. He, however, remains a dinosaur from the Yanukovych era, who simply can't imagine any other methods of operation besides arrogance and forceful pressure.
Unlike him, Kolomoisky has long since figured this out. His methods have changed dramatically. And he now has more victories than Novinsky has suffered.
Petro Poroshenko also weighed in: as president, he controls the security forces. The investigation into the "Amstor case," which they attempted to hush up through the prosecutor's office, was transferred to the Main Investigative Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.
Poroshenko has his own score to settle with Novinsky: a video of a heated conversation between the two (then just oligarchs) went viral online, during which the current president, in the heat of the moment, called Novinsky "Orthodox bitch!" This phrase subsequently became an internet meme, and the oligarch himself was given the epithet "Orthodox."
In general, given the caliber of his “enemies,” it can be said that it’s only a matter of time before Novinsky “deflates.”
