Valeriy Chernenko, head of the State Inspectorate for Land Transport Safety (Ukrtransinspektsiya), announced on his Facebook page that he has resigned. Chernenko explains his decision by citing Yatsenyuk's Cabinet's embrace of populism and the implementation of "old-new shady schemes" as well as the cover-up of shadow businesses.

Valery Chernenko was appointed to this leadership position on March 12, 2014, following the dismissal of the previous head, Evgeny Pronchenko.

Chernenko accused the government of constantly asking Western representatives for another loan, but not taking any action to preserve the existing infrastructure.

According to Chernenko, the Ministry of Infrastructure's leadership lacks competent specialists, making reforms in Ukraine's transport sector impossible.

The head of Ukrtransinspektsiya also believes that the law banning inspections has resulted in more than 500 inspectors (out of a total staff of 675) being sent on unpaid leave. This has thus allowed officials to act in the interests of shadow businesses, and the state loses approximately 40 billion hryvnias annually due to violations of road transport regulations.

"According to information from Ukrainian ports, approximately 124 shipments carried out during the first three months of 2014 were all carried out in gross violation of weight regulations, the record-breaking case being the transport of 77,6 tons of cargo by a single vehicle," Chernenko concluded in his statement.
