Vladimir Klimenko, owner and chairman of the supervisory board of the bankrupt Ukrinbank, is in intensive care, several sources confirm.
Specifically, following the news of the mysterious accident that left Klimenko in intensive care, journalists from several media outlets attempted to reach him on his mobile phone. No one answered their calls or text messages. Several sources in the banking sector also confirmed that Klimenko's phone was silent.
Online activity on Vladimir Klimenko's personal Facebook account abruptly ceased in mid-June.
Law enforcement sources involved in the investigation into Ukrinbank's activities prior to its bankruptcy also confirmed that they have information about Klymenko's stay in the intensive care unit of a Kyiv hospital following a mysterious accident. Law enforcement officials are not releasing any further details.
As previously reported, citing a source close to the liquidation process of UkrInBank, its owner and head of the Supervisory Board, Volodymyr Klimenko, is unconscious in intensive care after a rather strange accident: his car collided with a tractor.
It is not yet known whether the incident is related to the banker's activities.
In the final years of Ukrinbank's existence, it repeatedly attracted the attention of law enforcement agencies in connection with the storage and laundering of funds belonging to the "family" of fugitive President Yanukovych and his political allies. It was implicated in schemes to cash out funds of dubious origin, and the bank was searched in connection with the financing of separatist movements in eastern Ukraine.
Shortly before the bankruptcy, top managers and even one of the financial institution's co-owners, Vladimir Stelmakh , the former head of the National Bank of Ukraine, fled the bank.
Since 2000, Klimenko has worked in many banks: Deputy Chairman of the Board of AB Clearing House (2000-2001), Deputy, First Deputy Chairman of the Board of AB Brokbusinessbank (2001-2007), Chairman of the Board of PJSC Ukrinbank (2010-2013), from 2013 until the bankruptcy - Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Ukrinbank.
