Vlasenko fears that Zhvania and Kivalov will split the legal profession

Member of Parliament Serhiy Vlasenko believes that the re-election of members of the High Council of Justice (HCJ) at the upcoming congress of the National Association of Advocates of Ukraine could provoke a split in the legal profession.

According to Vlasenko, the potential initiators of the re-election of members of the Supreme Court of Justice who are not currently under the control of the Presidential Administration are David Zhvania and Serhiy Kivalov. "David Zhvania has suddenly decided to become a second Portnov, only for Poroshenko. He's covering for the President, exerting completely illegal, non-procedural pressure on all courts. He's trying to mold the Supreme Court of Justice to suit the President in the same way," Vlasenko told Glavkom. "And Kivalov, according to my information, was promised protection in exchange for using his influence over the judicial system as a sub-resource for Zhvania."

Serhiy Vlasenko also believes that "the court's decision (regarding the violation of the procedure for electing members of the Supreme Court of Justice at the congress of the National Association of Bar Associations of Ukraine – Ed.) is questionable because the congress's decisions were overturned, but the newly elected members of the Supreme Court of Justice have not been stripped of their powers. Therefore, there are grounds to interpret them as remaining members of the Supreme Court of Justice, as they took the oath. I believe that in the current situation and the current state of the legal profession, holding any congress could serve to exacerbate divisions and scandals within the legal profession."

The Congress of the National Association of Advocates of Ukraine is scheduled for November 20-21, 2014 in Mukachevo.
