Milan meeting between Poroshenko and Merkel: Putin and Merkel disagree with US proposals

On October 16, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and German Chancellor Angela Merkel met. The conversation summarized the support and implementation of the Minsk meeting's provisions.

Let's remember that the "Minsk Agreements" were a gamble—in the final protocol, the only official signatory was Russian Ambassador to Ukraine Mikhail Zurabov. The positions of the other "signatories" had no legal force.

President Poroshenko’s press secretary Svyatoslav Tsegolko himself confirms the non-specific result of the meeting in Milan: “The parties emphasized the importance of the renewed implementation of Minsk households between 5 and 19 June,” Tsegolko said.

A logical question arises: why did Chancellor Merkel postpone her meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin?

Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin

Experts claim that Merkel is currently trying to protect the interests of the European Union, and therefore is acting as a mediator between Russia and the United States. The talks with Poroshenko were scheduled significantly earlier than the meeting with Putin. They clearly did not satisfy Ms. Merkel and Mr. Putin. Therefore, the meeting between Putin and Merkel was postponed under the trumped-up pretext of "Putin's lateness." Because it was supposed to involve the signing of a specific document regarding the situation in Ukraine or the announcement of a common position.
