Zaporizhstal: Metinvest decided to pollute Zaporizhzhia

zaporozhstalMetinvest will pollute an area in Zaporizhzhia equivalent to 70 football fields.

Zaporizhstal Iron and Steel Works will build a new shop on Chorna Hora. The construction of the new converter shop will improve the environment and reduce crime in the city. Rostyslav Shurma, CEO of Zaporizhstal Iron and Steel Works, announced this today during a press conference on "Preparing the Markusova Gully Site for the Construction of a Converter Shop," according to Golos Zaporizhzhia.

The implementation of this project will eliminate the inefficient open-hearth method of steelmaking, reduce atmospheric emissions, expand the range of manufactured products, and decrease natural gas consumption.
“As soon as the new workshop is put into operation, the plant will abandon open-hearth furnaces,” they say at the plant.
The project budget is $1,5 billion. The expected payback period is approximately eight years. The development area will be 25 hectares, and the converter shop itself will cover 50 hectares (or the size of 70 football fields).
According to the steel plant's CEO, the project is significant and landmark not only for the city but also for the country. This construction project could become one of the three largest in the history of independent Ukraine.
Shurma previously noted that, beginning in late 2013 and continuing for the next three years, the company's attention was focused on a key project: the construction of a converter shop.
Before construction begins, metallurgists will remove waste from the site of the future workshop. "It needs to be not only removed but also properly disposed of," the company says, noting that clearing the site could take two years.
Let us recall that Zaporizhstal is one of the largest industrial enterprises in Ukraine, whose products are widely known and in demand among consumers in the domestic market and in many countries around the world.
The plant specializes in high-quality hot-rolled steel coils, hot-rolled sheets, cold-rolled sheets, cold-rolled coils made of carbon and low-alloy steels, as well as steel strip, black tinplate, and bent sections.
The main consumers of the plant's products are manufacturers of welded pipes, enterprises in the automotive, transport, and agricultural engineering industries, and manufacturers of household appliances.
Zaporizhstal is in the process of being integrated into Rinat Akhmetov’s mining and metallurgical monopoly Metinvest.
