Ukrainian businessman Konstantin Zhevago borrowed funds from the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) to refinance the failed Finance and Credit Bank using the Belotserkivska Thermal Power Plant as collateral. This information was announced by NBU Governor Valeria Gontareva.
According to her, the bank has received 6,4 billion hryvnias in refinancing since 2009. However, according to Gontareva, Zhevago had no intention of returning this money, but rather viewed it as a banking resource.
After Gontareva took over as NBU head, she held a meeting with the businessman, after which Zhevago contributed UAH 1 billion in cash and an additional UAH 1,6 billion through sub-debt conversion to the bank's capital. The National Bank, in turn, financed an additional UAH 1,45 billion.
However, after Finance and Credit Bank was removed from the list of problem banks, its owner refused to fulfill its obligations. Although the minimum amount in the Finance and Credit correspondent account was supposed to be 500-600 million hryvnias, it fell to 250-350 million hryvnias three times.
