Former MP Oleksandr Onishchenko received North Macedonian citizenship, writes Bagnet.

According to information Balkan InsightThe decision to grant citizenship to Onishchenko, who is under US sanctions and is involved in a corruption investigation in Ukraine and is on the international wanted list, was made at the end of May 2022 at a meeting of the North Macedonian government.

The government meeting minutes, which were later published, stated that Onishchenko's citizenship was granted based on the "positive opinion of the Agency for Youth and Sports" of North Macedonia.

In addition to the agency, three other bodies provided their opinion on Onishchenko: the Equestrian Federation, the Olympic Committee of North Macedonia, and the National Security Agency.

The latter, as the documents show, spent over a year preparing its conclusion (Onishchenko submitted documents back in 2020) and found nothing in the former Ukrainian MP's biography that could prevent him from obtaining North Macedonian citizenship.

The initiative to grant Onishchenko citizenship came from the Equestrian Federation, confirmed its president, Risto Josifovski. Its conclusion stated that he "will support the development of equestrian sports," has experience as a coach, and will represent "our country at leading international sporting events."

Five months after receiving North Macedonian citizenship, Onishchenko was already competing under the North Macedonian flag at an equestrian competition in Saint-Tropez, France. On Instagram, he posts photos with celebrities, from Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadalado to actresses Eva Longoria and Paris Hilton.
